Africa had a coup problem. According to Jonathan M. Powell and Clayton L. Thyne, the continent accounts for 214 of the 486 attempted or successful global coups from It accounted for 106 of the 242 successful ones. Indeed, 45 of the 54 African nations have experienced at least one coup attempt since 1950.
