WATER WARS IN NIGERIA

by Nextier SPD

The next global war could be fought over water. By 2040, about 5 billion people will live in parts of the world with limited access to water and this could be the trigger for the next global conflagration.

The 2012 Global Water security report estimates that global demand for freshwater resources will exceed availability by 2040. The impact of the water insecurity will be far-retching to include low productivity, unhygienic conditions, internal displacement of populations, rising conflicts, and potentially, war.

This edition of Nextier SPD Policy Weekly presents a review of the threat of water insecurity in Nigeria and proffers policy recommendations.
