Chor-ping is grown. Both he and his own mother are maltreated by wife No. 1, but No. 1's own son Chor-hee gets along well with them. Chor-ping gets acquainted with Ching while herding the sheep. Prince Fei Lung, now grown and excellent in intelligence and martial, arts, wins the favour of the sovereign. Prince No. 3 tries to murder Fei Lung while he's serving incense for his father. Chor-ping perchance unfolds his plot and saves Fei Lung's life. Fei Lung promises to return Chor-pings favor at a later date. Master Tang makes advances to Ching. Chor-ping and Chor-hee come to her rescue, and reprimand him. Furious at heart, Tang sets fire to the Wongs and No. 2 is burnt to death. Chor-ping reports the case to the magistracy, but Tang bribes the magistrate into framing him. Chor-ping is imprisoned and helps an old man Wu Yau in jail to do hard labour.
